How To Take Care Of Infants And Kids During Diwali
Oct 17, 2017
The festive season is all about having fun and frolic with your family. Everyone, the grown-ups, the kids, and the grandparents, waits for the festive days to begin and the festival of lights to arrive. And, if you have a little one in the family who is having his or her first Diwali, or your kid is finally of that age when he can hold a fuljhadi of his own, it becomes even more special.
Newborns and kids require extra attention during the festivities and we have some tips for you to ensure sampurna suraksha for your kids and family this holiday.
Keep it regular
Little babies are more used to their daily routine than we think, and keeping things according to their daily routine keeps them happy and calm. Try planning your festive routines with that in mind and your little one will be smiling perfectly when it is time for the family picture.
Keep it familiar
We love Diwali so much because everyone comes home for the celebrations. But, newborns can get overstimulated by seeing a lot of unfamiliar faces. Try to keep the infant or kids around familiar faces so that they are calm and get along well with everybody.
Avoid loud crackers
On the Diwali eve, keep the baby well insulated from the noise outside. You can choose a room in the house where noise penetration is minimal and use a woollen cap or scarf (if the temperature permits) to further protect the toddler's delicate ears.
Use a home air purifier
We all know about rising levels of pollution during the Diwali days. Newborns are susceptible to air pollution more than the adults are, as they breathe more rapidly and have delicate lungs. So, it is advisable that you get a home air purifier in the room where the baby will be staying.
Safety tips for older kids
If your kid is celebrating his/her first Diwali, there are a few things which you should do to ensure their safety,
- Dress them in comfortable clothing rather than sequins which may cause rashes. Also, sequins pose fire hazard and should be avoided.
- Keep the diyas and other electrical lighting out of their reach. Sometimes, a kid's natural curiosity can prompt self harm.
- Don't be irresponsible or over enthusiastic when getting crackers for them, choose only the age appropriate and safe fire crackers.
- Keep a first aid kid nearby in case an accident occurs, it's better safe than sorry.
We hope that these tips will help you and your loved ones have a safer and joyful Diwali this year and in the years to come. If you have a pet, you can read our guide to have a pet-friendly Diwali here.
