Science Based Benefits Of Drinking Water
Sep 14, 2018
Drinking at least 8 ounces of water is recommended for healthy adults. The simple reason being that is the amount of water our body loses during a day. There are however different opinions on how effective or efficient that rule is. So, we decided to share some scientific facts for benefits of water for our health.
Water drives physical performance
Our muscles are made of tissue and water. Even as little as a 2% drop in body's water levels can impair physical performance. When you don't drink enough water during workouts or trekking tours, body cramps occur. These cramps are the muscles' way of saying that they don't have enough water to keep them functioning.
Hydration keeps you energetic
Water provides calorie-free nutrition by acting as a carrier for nutrition you gain through digestion. It supplies vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fatty acids and other vital nutrients to the cells through the blood stream. This means being dehydrated also slows down the supply of energy to your body parts and in worse case scenarios even leave you light headed.
Water is important for brain function
As any other organ in the body, brain also relies on energy to function. If you are dehydrated, your power to analyse, process and take action also diminishes. A fluid loss of 1.36% can have a veritable effect on your mood and concentration levels. Chronic dehydration can also cause dementia and other brain impairments.
Drinking water helps with kidney stones
It is generally noted that drinking more water can ease the pain caused by kidney stones. The stones are not actually stones but mineral crystals which may form in the urinary system. Drinking more water can also help you avoid developing kidney stones as more water means more urine flow, so the minerals do not get a chance to crystallise in the first place.
Water helps with hangovers
A hangover is the nauseating feeling you get after consuming too much alcohol. Since alcohol is diuretic it stops your body from reabsorbing water and makes you pee more, leading to dehydration. Drinking more water will ease the symptoms of a hangover which is partly caused by dehydration.
